Major Tier 1 Automotive installs our new MPI underground scrap system

Conveyor specs:
3 different conveyor section; 175’ long, 185’ long and 83’ long. All 24 inches wide. Located in a pit approximately 6 feet below floor level.
Conveyor system rated for 15,000 pounds of scrap per hour.

What did it replace:
We replaced an aging “steel belt” conveyance system with a shaker system. Customer had over 450 feet of underground steel belts that conveyed scrap out of the
building and into a scrap distribution system. This system was being fed from 13 presses.
They were plagued with consistent weekly downtime due to failing steel belts jams.
Whenever one does break down, the ones feeding it typically keep feeding onto the broken
one until someone notices.
The situation needed a better solution.

Solution/Benefits:
The shaker system eliminates the issue of scrap getting caught in between the steel cleats and depositing the scrap underneath the conveyor and causing a massive build up of scrap in the pit. This also caused long term damage to the conveyor frames. All scrap that landed on the shaker pan was distributed to the large incline conveyor to deposit the scrap into scrap trailers.

Linear Transfer Automation New Product

Linear has announced that it has forged a strategic alliance with Strothmann Automation of Germany. Strothmann and Linear have entered into an exclusive technology agreement for the North American market for the Compact Crossbar and the high-speed Tandem Press Line Automation products from Strothmann.

The Strothmann Innovative feeder for press lines lowers production costs.
This feeder can do more than simply load and unload presses: The FeederPlus 6neo can also center blanks and deposit workpieces in the correct orientation. This reduces the costs and space requirements of press lines significantly.

The starting point was the FeederPlus 6, which has been used with great success in a total of 11 press lines for 10 years. Through further development into the FeederPlus 6neo the feeder was adapted to the current demands of modern press plants. The feeder is designed for max. 16 strokes/min. A sophisticated combination of state-of-the-art mechanics and highly-developed software allows the feeder to perform functions in the FoL and EoL, which would otherwise require bulky, expensive additional components.

50 Tips for Better Die Protection

Tip #10 listed below as an example

Half feed for high speed

If the feed cycle is long enough, or the press runs fast enough, full feed won’t occur until after the critical angle.

If this happens, your full feed sensor needs to top stop the press to avoid sticking it on bottom.

Die damage can result…. But… Don’t stop there.
Install a sensor to detect the strip half way through the progression (or early enough to E-stop).

Dorner Retractable Tail Conveyor

A retractable conveyor, or retracting tail, is a conveyor frame with the ability to retract or extend, typically on slides or rails. The capability to retract, either manually or pneumatically, can improve system flexibility by adding functionality into your conveyor. There are a variety of applications for retractable conveyor tails.

Some of the major uses include:

  • Reject for contaminated or rejected products
  • Depositing products onto another conveyor or tray. This can be done in a precise, exact layout or simply dropping product.
  • Product Routing into multiple lines.
  • Walk-Through applications where you need quick and easy access to the other side of the line or access to equipment. Depending on your application, the retracting function can happen infrequently with low accuracy or it can reoccur every few seconds with precision.

50 Tips for Better Die Protection

Tip # 2 listed below as an example

Improve the Press Stopping Time
The faster the press stops, the more time a die protection system has to detect problems. In addition to regular brake maintenance, the following things can improve the press’s stopping time:

  • Quick dump valves on older clutch/brake units
  • Properly, or better, automatically set counterbalance pressure
  • Valves properly sized to the press

PRI Swift Pages HeaderDorner FlexMove Conveyors Deliver Flexibility & Productivity

Floor space is a valuable commodity in today’s manufacturing plants and warehousing operations. Conveyors can make or break a facility’s ability to put its space to optimal use.

Four characteristics to look for when seeking the best conveyor for your operation:

Flexible layout – the ability to maneuver in tight conditions around machinery to maximize floor space is important, as is the ability for the conveyor to go vertical.

Increased production and capacity capabilities – the right conveyor system will boost your production capabilities, allowing you to reliably move more product in less time.

Efficiency through automation – the conveyor that best suits your application will use automation to improve production speed, increase accuracy and free employees for other tasks.

Ease of purchase, speed of installation – the best conveyor in the world won’t do you any good if the purchase process requires you to jump through too many hoops or if installation is complicated and time-consuming.

Dorner’s FlexMove conveyors not only accommodate tight corners but also can move product up and down with minimal space required. They’re also capable of twisting 360-degrees to transport products vertically in an extremely small footprint.

FlexMove conveyors also offer important advantages in boosting capacity and production capabilities, especially for small parts: they come with a 5/8” nose bar transfer to safely maneuver parts as small as 3” in diameter at speeds of up to 200 feet per minute.

FlexMove truly is as flexible as its name implies. Aside from tight spaces and complex configurations, these conveyors are used for a wide range of other applications, such as:

Part handling and orientation
Transfers
Assembly automation
Machine conveyance
Elevation changes
Accumulation
Buffering

Advantages of Electric Shaker Conveying Systems

Properly installed and maintained electric shaker systems eliminate the common causes of operating failures while providing years of trouble-free service. In addition, they also deliver significant performance and cost advantages over their pneumatically driven counterparts.

Advantages include the following:

  1. Efficiency. Electric shaker conveyors eliminate disruptions caused by maintenance and repairs frequently required by pneumatic shaker systems or belted conveyors, thus providing immediate and significant boosts in shop-floor efficiency. Also eliminated: wasteful leaks in air tubing, which can run thousands of feet, along with the need for air compressors, thus freeing valuable floor space.
  2. Reliability. Given the harsh operating conditions encountered in metal stamping plants, electric shaker conveyors are designed, engineered and built to be extremely reliable. Some systems, including MPI’s M- series models, for example, avoid using seals and damping components that require maintenance and repairs. More-complicated pneumatic models feature more parts and assemblies that can break down. Except for the need to clear infrequent jams, electric shaker systems can provide years of trouble-free service.
  3. Simplicity. Pneumatic systems require compressed air from compressors, often located far from stamping presses. The compressors, tubing and connections required with these shaking systems constitute a complicated infrastructure that requires lubrication, plus periodic and as-needed maintenance and repair. Electric shaker systems operate virtually maintenance-free with much longer service intervals and fewer required spare parts.
  4. Energy savings. Electric shaker systems use 71 percent less energy as compared with 3.4-ft.3/min.pneumatic setups. Given the number of stamping presses in a plant and how long they run—assuming similar run times for their scrap handling systems—annual energy-cost savings from electric shaker conveyors can total tens of thousands of dollars. Less energy consumption means a lower carbon footprint for stamping plants.
  5. Maintenance. Electric shaker systems, virtually maintenance-free, save hundreds of hours in plant maintenance over a year’s time, enabling staff to focus on other maintenance tasks possibly deferred due to upkeep required on pneumatic shaker systems. Pneumatic conveyors require regular lubrication of air lines and seals to prevent leaks, and this maintenance must be conducted over many thousands of feet of tubing typically found in medium- to large-sized stamping plants.
  6. Flexibility. Electric shaker conveyors offer flexibility to meet a variety of production configurations, and ease reconfigurations as well. For example, MPI’s M-series units are engineered for industry-standard T-slot configurations—common in stamping plants. Pneumatic units prove more difficult to install, and reconfiguring production lines also requires reconfiguration of long-run air lines.
  7. Less noise. Noise in stamping plants is a given—an environmental condition subject to limits set by the U.S. Occupational Safety & Health Administration. Pneumatic shaker systems emitting loud air bursts with each trim clearing present a bigger issue. Electric shaker systems operate almost noiselessly via relatively small motors.

Die Protection Technical Tips

Know the Critical Angle

The “critical angle” is the last point in the press cycle where an E- stop will stop the ram before the die closes

The goal of die protection is to stop the press before the die can be damaged

You should know the critical angle for every die, in every press that can run it.

To prevent die damage, the control must be finished checking the sensors before the critical angle.

SmartPAC PRO’S Brake Monitor can help you to establish the critical angle

Convert any press into a fully programmable transfer press.

Leasing companies treat servo transfers as capital equipment, which can free up initial cash
requirements for financing the automation. Many stampers that have retrofitted their
older presses into transfer presses have experienced a growth curve in their bottom lines
and increased their customer’s confidence in their capabilities

  1. Bed length and tonnage. The current trend for the transfer retrofit market is for longer
beds and higher tonnage so that additional stations can be added. Longer beds facilitate
coilfeeding and blanking in the first stations, which eliminates the need for offline blanking
and the purchase of a destack feeder.
  2. Press stroke. A transfer system runs more efficiently when a sufficient stroke window
allows the transfer the time it needs to make its moves when the die is not engaged.
  3. Press window. The press window has a direct relationship to the type of transfer system
you select and how it is mounted to the press.
  4. Press control upgrades may be required for safety or expansion purposes. Safety
upgrades include guarding, such as light curtains or fencing. Upgrades also can expand
press operation features and reliability depending on the press vintage.
  5. Mechanical upgrades. A modern transfer can physically mount on any press. The press
design dictates the mounting location. Modifications to accommodate the transfer may
include relocating piping or electrical services after you have determined the transfer’s
    location.
