Minimize Conveyor Injury Risks with Safeguarding

ASME B20.1-2018 applies to the design, construction, installation, maintenance, inspection, and operation of conveyors and conveying systems in relation to hazards. OSHA has also issued its own standard 1926.555(s)(1), General Conveyor Safety Requirements. While conveyors are integral facets of the distribution and manufacturing process, they also pose the potential to cause serious injuries and sometimes even fatalities. In fact, the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics has reported that over 40 workplace fatalities a year are the result of conveyor accidents, along with 9,000 injuries. While in motion, conveyor systems have inherent and obvious dangers. Belts continuously move at speeds up to 600 feet per minute or 10 feet per second. There are many pinch-points within their machinery, any of which could cause an injury to a worker. Common employee injuries incurred working with conveyors include arm and hand amputations, finger lacerations, burns, scrapes and broken bones. Even when employees are being careful, accidents can happen. It’s easy for loose clothing, jewelry or hair to get trapped in conveyor belts. If workers aren’t paying attention, they could get caught in the machine. Every conveyor belt injury is costly, affecting worker morale, availability of trained labor, lost production, and increased overhead due to insurance premiums, along with mountains of paperwork, lawsuits and possible fines from government regulatory agencies. Conveyor belt injuries account for nearly 25% of all workers’ compensation claims. Safeguarding conveyors protects employees from injuries, and companies from potential financial ruin. Safeguarding options include emergency stops, pull cords, safety rated limit switches, safety mats, guards, and presence sensing devices. Wintriss Shop Floor Connect Success Article
published by Advanced Manufacturing

Kalba Ilco in North Carolina employed Wintriss ShopFloorConnect to replace a manual paper reporting system with the objective of becoming more efficient paperless facility. The Shop Floor Connect system measures (OEE) overall equipmeent effectiveness. It collects uptime, downtime, reasons for downtime, production counts, then calculates OEE.. Data collection is automated, minimizing operator involvement and ensuring data is timely and accurate. ShopFloorConnect may be connected to stamping presses via Wintriss SmartPAC controls, Wintriss SMI 2 suitable for any machine, or many existing PLC’s.

Prime Controls Double Sheet Detection

Double Sheet Detection is an important part of quality control to prevent two or

more sheets of metal from entering into a process at one time. Failure to detect

double sheets of metal or improper thickness can damage tools and dies,

resulting in costly repairs and downtime. Prime Controls systems are created by

combining a control and single or dual probes, depending on the application and

Steel double sheet detectors use a single probe that will measure a wide range

of thickness for steel and other ferrous metals. Typically used for sheet feeders,

robots, and destackers in automotive, appliance, and canmaking industries.

All metal detectors are paired with two non contact double sheet probes that can

measure a wide range of thickness for all metals. These control systems detect

double sheet conditions when metal is able to pass between the two sensors.

Aluminum detectors are paired with a single non contacting double sheet sensor.

The system can detect a wider range of aluminum thickness and other nonferrous

Prime also offers part detectors to detect accurate positioning, presence, or

absence of very small parts.

Slide Locks an Alternative to Die Safety Blocks

The traditional practice for protecting metal press stamping operators that have to enter the area

between the upper and lower die plates of the press, is to use die blocks. This is a cost-effective

way to keep operators safe and comply with OSHA regulations but it is also time consuming,

cumbersome, and may be physically demanding. Proper placement of safety blocks and available

space is often a problem. Proper height adjustment can be challenging as well. Accordingly,

operators often resist using them.

The Pascal Slide Lock System (SLA) is an electric slide fall protection system which eliminates

the risk of physical injury, accident, or damage to the tool. One of the most significant advantages

of the SLA is that the operator can lock the press slide in any position between T.D.C. and B.D.C.

Furthermore, this can be accomplished with the flick of a switch in a few seconds compared to

several minutes to place die blocks.

Slide locks are expensive compared to the die block and retro-fitting requires some skill.

Regardless, the cost of slide locks is easily justified, given the safety, ergonomic, and time saving

The SLA comes in 3 different sizes, SLA32, SLA50, and SLA80. SLA80 can hold an 88 U.S. ton

ram and upper die. The SLA32 can handle 35 U.S. tons and the SLA50 can handle 55 U.S. tons.

A safety factor is already built into these numbers, so there is no need to add in any more.
