Overview
Southworth coil cars are scissor lift coil cars that lift and transport coils. Three series cover coils from 4,000 to 100,000 lb: LS-Series coil cars for smaller, narrower coils, L-Series Cam coil cars for intermediate weights and Opposed-Cylinder coil cars for large, heavy coils. PRI supplies Southworth coil cars alongside the rest of the Southworth line.
Key Features
- Three capacity ranges
- LS-Series cars handle 4,000 to 12,000 lb, L-Series Cam cars 10,000 to 45,000 lb and Opposed-Cylinder cars 40,000 to 100,000 lb.
- Scissor lift designs
- LS-Series cars are built on Southworth's direct-thrust LS lift tables for substantial vertical lift in a compact design. L-Series Cam cars use Southworth's original scissor lift coil car design.
- Opposed-cylinder lift
- On the largest cars, cylinders push up on one side of the scissors center pivot while pushing down on the other, allowing for maximum capacity and minimal pivot.
- Lift and transport
- Coil cars lift the coil and traverse forward and reverse on tracks.
- Vee cradle or blocker rolls
- Cars can be equipped with a vee cradle or blocker rolls. Blocker rolls stay in contact with the coil during the final wraps at the winder.
- Many combinations
- The coil car series comes in many combinations of load capacity, vertical travel, tabletop size and type, and power source.
Product Line / Models
Southworth coil car series and standard ratings:
- LS-Series Coil Cars (small capacity) – ten standard models, 4,000 to 12,000 lb, lowered heights from 7.625" to 12.625". For smaller, narrower coils in stamping and other intermittent-duty applications.
- L-Series Cam Coil Cars (medium capacity) – 13 standard models, 10,000 to 45,000 lb, lifting heights of over 48" and table lengths from 48.5" to 70.5". The L-Series Cam lift table gives the lowest possible collapsed height.
- Opposed-Cylinder Coil Cars (large capacity) – 15 standard models, 40,000 to 100,000 lb, lifting heights up to 78" and table lengths from 64" to 92". For process lines, mills and other heavy-duty environments.
Applications & Benefits
- Stamping: LS-Series coil cars handle smaller, narrower coils in stamping and other intermittent-duty applications.
- Process lines and mills: Opposed-Cylinder coil cars handle large, heavy coils in demanding, heavy-duty environments.
- Winder unloading: The car raises to the coil, and the coil is seated on the cradle before the winder chucks release.
- Moving coils: Coil cars lift coils and carry them along a track to where they are needed.
How to Choose the Right Southworth Coil Car
- Start with the heaviest coil. LS-Series cars go to 12,000 lb, L-Series Cam to 45,000 lb and Opposed-Cylinder to 100,000 lb.
- Set the lowered height the car must fit under and the raised height it must reach.
- Check the coil size against the standard table lengths.
- Choose the top: vee cradle or blocker rolls.
- Lay out the track and travel path, with guarding to keep people and mobile equipment clear.
- Confirm the power supply and who will furnish the controls.
Why Southworth Coil Cars Are Trusted
- Original scissor lift coil car design: L-Series Cam coil cars use Southworth's original scissor lift coil car design.
- Exclusive opposed-cylinder design: Built for large, heavy coils up to 100,000 lb.
- 38 standard models: Ten LS-Series, 13 L-Series Cam and 15 Opposed-Cylinder models cover 4,000 to 100,000 lb.
