Safety blocks hold a press slide open so it can't close on anyone working in the die area during die setting, maintenance or repair. PRI supplies Protech Series 42 blocks with standard interlocks, Saf-T-Block adjustable and fixed blocks from 5 to 150 tons, and Pascal SLA slide locks that lock the slide with a switch.

Yes. OSHA 1910.217(d)(9)(iv) requires employers to provide and enforce the use of safety blocks whenever dies are being adjusted or repaired in a mechanical power press.
ANSI B11.19 requires electrical interlocking of die safety blocks to the machine's motor and control circuits, so the press can't run while a block is in use.
You need the static load (the weight of the slide, ram components and upper die) and the opening where the block goes, measured with the press at the top of stroke. Protech's rule of thumb is one ton of static load per cubic foot of bed area times shut height.
Divide the total static load by one block's rating. Larger straight side presses often need two or more, and two blocks should be placed at diagonal corners.
Aluminum is preferred because it deforms under overload. Magnesium can fracture and throw shrapnel, and steel should never be used.
